Whin Grassland Project

Whin Sill is a hard quartz-dolerite rock that supports a very distinct plant community, known as Whin Grassland. Examples of Whin stone outcrops can be seen at Bamburgh Castle and Houseteads Roman Fort.

An audit of the Whin Grassland resource in Northumberland took place in 2006 and highlighted a significant reduction in the habitat since the last surveys carried out in the early 1980’s. This project will revisit 19 of the best sites from the 2006 survey and analyse and map them as accurately as possible in order to enhance our understanding of this unique habitat.
