Ponds for All
Despite their importance to wildlife, archaeology, culture and leisure, ponds are consistently undervalued probably because of their small size, familiarity and perceived abundance.
It is well recognised that our ponds provide:
- a unique biodiversity resource, rich in species of plants, invertebrates and amphibians
- an important part of our history, culture and past agricultural practices
- a visual focus in many landscapes
- an amenity for many communities
- a source of recreation and education
This project will enable farmers and communities to create such wetland resources. This will be done by giving the correct advice and training on the potential for the creation of wetlands and ponds as well as providing a grant that would contribute towards the capital costs of construction. Wetlands would be targeted as far as possible in areas that can best contribute towards biodiversity, diffuse pollution reduction and flood alleviation. The nature of the wetlands will be decided on a case by case basis depending on the site conditions but will range from scrapes and reed filtration beds to larger open water bodies.
