Breeding freshwater pearl mussels
A population of 42 pearl mussels have been taken to Kielder Hatchery with the intention of captive breeding and eventually releasing young mussels to support the aging wild population in the Rivers North Tyne and Rede. To date there has been no successful breeding activity.
