BioBlitz 2009
After the success of our first BioBlitz at Druridge Bay in 2008 (despite the weather!) the members of the Northumberland Biodiversity Partnership will again be breaking out their binoculars, nets and identification books in search of species in 2009.
The venue for this year is Holy Island. This site is part of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve; a combination of sand dunes, saltmarshes and mudflats which create a place which is home to fascinating plants and a food supply that attracts bird visitors from thousands of miles away.
The NNR is managed by Natural England Reserve Staff to protect habitats and wildlife for people's enjoyment.
A BioBlitz is a race against time to count as many species of plant and animal as possible at a particular site in a 24 hour period. It provides a chance for the public to see what scientists are doing.
Species recording will start at 13:00 on Friday 12th June and will finish at 13:00 Saturday 13th June.
There will be a number of experts surveying for different types of species throughout the 24 hour period. There will also be the following free activities for the public to get involved in to learn more about our native species:
Friday 12th June
- Rock Pooling 11:00 until 14:00
- Bird Spotting 13:00 until 16:00
Saturday 13th June
- Moth Recording 10:00 until 11:00
- Bird Spotting 10:00 until 13:00
- Pond Wildlife 10:00 until 13:00
- Minibeasts 10:00 until 13:00
- Whin Grassland 10:00 until 13:00
- Rock Pooling 12:00 until 14:00
Access to Holy Island is subject to the tide. Safe crossing times for 12th and 13th June can be found on the Northumberland Life Website
The BioBlitz marquee will be located in the Chare Ends Car Park on Holy Island. Drop in during the event to get involved.
A massive thank you to Lesley at Cafe Beangoose B&B who has been so helpful in providing accomodation for the overnighters.
