Barn Owl Conservation in Kielder

Barn owls across the country underwent a serious decline in the later decades of the 20th century due in part to loss of nesting habitat. Work in Kielder Forest by the Forestry Commission has established a nest box scheme which in 2006 successfully reared 41 young.

Monitoring has shown that the number of barn owls in Kielder forest is increasing, due in part to the large areas of suitable habitat established as the forest matures and open areas are created through harvesting.
